The Mt. Ashland Locker Lodge is a modern mountain lodge designed to replace the mountain’s aging and dilapidated locker lodge while working within the constraints of an existing site. The new building was required to remain within the footprint of the existing lodge while preserving the adjacent maintenance shop, resulting in a compact four-story building that makes the most of its prominent location at the base of the slopes.
Each level is carefully organized around the unique needs of the mountain and its guests. The ground floor, located at the parking lot elevation, houses Ski Patrol and includes a treatment room for guests requiring immediate medical attention, along with a covered area for ambulance access. The second floor aligns directly with the ski slopes and serves as the heart of the lodge, providing easy access to lockers, retail, concessions, and an expansive outdoor deck with seating and fire pits. Covered and wind-protected areas extend the season for outdoor gathering and provide a comfortable place to relax between runs.
The third floor is dedicated to the mountain’s administrative offices, while the fourth floor culminates in a welcoming restaurant with tall ceilings and expansive glazing. From this elevated position, guests are treated to panoramic views of Mt. Shasta to the south and Mt. McLoughlin to the northeast.
The exterior takes a simple, contemporary approach to the traditional mountain lodge. Warm wood cladding, generous glazing, and deep roof overhangs create a building that feels both modern and rooted in its alpine setting. The result is a compact, highly functional lodge that strengthens the experience of arriving at Mt. Ashland and creates a new gathering place for skiers, staff, and visitors alike.
